The (Mostly) True Story of Taylor Swine the Political Pig

Barbara Anderson - author, Rachel Gasper - illustrator, Archway Publishing, 2018, Paperback $14.99, Hardcover $21.99

This heart-warming storybook teaches elementary school readers the importance of getting involved in politics and helping out with political campaigns. It shows them that anyone can help—even a fictional pig.

In the book's 44 pages, we get to know Taylor Swine, a little pig with a big dream to become a politician. Although all the other animals make fun of her, Taylor is determined to make her dream come true—even if it means leaving home. One day she wiggles under a fence and heads down a country road, hoping to have a promising future helping others.

As is so often the case, the journey becomes more difficult than she imagined. A loving family comes to Taylor's rescue. They eventually teach her that there are many ways to help good candidates get elected to public office. Along the way, Taylor discovers the importance of family and learns how to take an active role in the political process. The book was inspired by a real pet pig named Taylor Swine that lives in Maple Grove, Minnesota. She is frequently seen in parades with political candidates who promise to "Cut the Pork."

During the current election cycle, it is important to teach children why political campaigns matter, how they can ensure that the best people win, and why even children (and pigs!) should participate.

In the foreword, parents are given suggestions about involving their children in a campaign: have them help hand out flyers, stuff envelopes, make phone calls, put up signs, take them along to the voting booth, and watch the returns come in together. At the end of the book are questions for parents to discuss with their children—including political terms to learn.

Radio and TV host, speaker, author, and columnist Dr. Gina Loudon has endorsed this entertaining 'pig tale.' Loudon says: "This book is a winner for young kids who want a fun introduction to the American political scene. It teaches children that no dream is too big and no task too small when it comes to making our country a better place for everyone. Filled with charming illustrations, this story about a lovable pig is sure to become your child's favorite picture book."

Proceeds from the Taylor Swinebook's sales go to the Child Protection League to further their work of promoting child welfare.
